IITA has inaugurated the Resource Innovation, Sustainability, and Efficiency (RISE) Committee to champion responsible resource stewardship, accelerate cost-effective operations, and embed sustainability in how we work—everywhere we work. Launched in alignment with the Institute’s 2024–2030 strategy, RISE connects people, data, and practical action to deliver high-impact improvements across transport, energy, water, and infrastructure. 

RISE’s work is centered on practical, high-impact areas that directly influence how IITA uses resources and delivers results. The committee focuses on improving transportation and fleet efficiency through smarter routing, shared vehicle use, and emission reduction; strengthening energy and power utilization by scaling renewable energy adoption, upgrading systems for efficiency, and promoting responsible power use; and driving operational excellence through streamlined shared services that lower costs and enhance productivity across the institute.

In addition, RISE advances data and digitalisation by developing real-time dashboards and analytics for transparent, evidence-based decision-making. It also emphasizes people and inclusion, ensuring that sustainability initiatives reflect gender and youth perspectives while building the capacity of staff across stations and hubs. Together, these focus areas create a cohesive pathway for IITA to achieve long-term sustainability, efficiency, and institutional resilience.

RISE operates through close collaboration and shared responsibility across IITA’s service units and divisions. The committee partners with teams such as Digitalisation, IT, Data & GIS, Facility Management, Gender & Youth Integration, MELIA, Capacity Development, Corporate Services, and Communications to design and implement initiatives that are practical, inclusive, and evidence-based. By aligning its activities with IITA’s R4D (Research for Development), CSD (Corporate Services Directorate), and P4D (Partnerships for Delivery) mandates, RISE ensures that its interventions directly support the institute’s broader mission of scientific excellence and operational sustainability.

In practice, RISE functions as a catalyst—coordinating efforts, sharing insights, and promoting innovation across departments. To ensure rapid and localized execution, the committee co-opts colleagues from hubs and stations into specialized subcommittees, enabling each focus area to benefit from on-the-ground experience and regional perspectives. This approach strengthens ownership, speeds up decision-making, and ensures that sustainable practices are embedded in daily operations throughout IITA’s network.
